Description
Devils Tower is a really cool place to visit. As you drive in to Devils Tower you go through a Prairie Dog Town, and not only are they cute, but they are essential to the ecosystem. When you get to Devils Tower you will be in awe at just how big it is -- it's a very popular place for climbers and they look like little specks on the tower. There are two paths that go around Devils Tower, I call them the short path and the long path. The short path goes right around the base of the tower and the long path goes around the tower too, but it also goes out and over the boulder fields - there are times when you can't see Devils Tower from the long path. One thing you will notice regardless of which path you take, is that no sides of the tower are the same -- I find it interesting and cool to see all of the different perspectives of Devils Tower. To this day, Devils Tower is a sacred Native American site. When you walk up to the base of the tower, where the short path is, you will see Native American prayer bundles and other offerings. There is a lot of Native American lore as to how Devils Tower came to be. The lore varies a bit from tribe to tribe, but the gist of the lore is the same -- young, little Native American girls were out playing as usual when a bear started to chase them. The little girls ran and jumped up on a large, flat rock hoping to escape the bear. The rock grew higher and higher into the sky until they were safe from the bear's reach. The groves in Devils Tower are from the claws of the bear when he was trying to reach the little girls
